Activities in the Dordogne Valley, Périgord and Quercy

While staying at Latreille, there are plenty of local activities to keep you occupied: horse-riding, biking, canoeing on both the Dordogne and Ouysse rivers, fishing, swimming, golf (courses in Souillac & Brive) and walking the beautiful surrounding area. And, of course, picnics can be provided for any excursion.

And if you are interested in the birds and butterflies of the region, there is the most amazing selection around the months of May/June, when the wild flower meadows are at their best.

Southwest France is renowned as a gastonomic area of France, with specialites such as cepes, foie gras and truffles. There are three Michelin starred restaurants in the local area, one of which is situated further up stream on the river Ouysse.

What's Nearby the Mill

Latreille which is surrounded by the historic market towns of Gourdon,Sarlat, Souillac and Martel, is in the heart of the Lot and near to the Dordogne. Both regions offer varied and countless opportunites for exploration.

Rocamadour, just 20 minutes away, is one of the must-see gems of this area and deservedly the second most visited religious site in France. St Cirq Lapopie, a town built into the cliffs of the Lot river is also another attraction.

Cahors, the departmental capital that sits on the river Lot, has winding medieval streets, a noted historic bridge, and one of the best markets in the region. Down stream, the river Lot is also home to the vineyards that produce the Cahors appellation wines, renowned for their depth and body. Wine tastings can be arranged in a cave in Gourdon.

The town of Gourdon also boasts the Grottes de Cougnac's 25,000 year old cave paintings - the oldest that can be visited in France.

Lacave, 6km from Latreille, where the Dordogne river joins its smallest tributary the river Ouysse, has a huge cave system that is well worth a visit.

The next Mill up river from Latreille is Moulin de Cougnaguet, a fortified mill-house and museum . It has an ancient but operational water-powered flour-mill, and it still makes its own flour. A tour of the mill is highly recommended.

In summary, the region has a remarkable number of pre-historic sites, medieval towns, chateaux and gardens, all set in breathtaking scenery.
